Invitation to the Annual Scientific Meeting 3rd - 6th April 2009

On behalf of the Local Organising Committee, I am pleased to invite all health professionals with interests in respiratory science to attend the 2009 Annual Scientific Meeting of the Australian and New Zealand Society for Respiratory Science being held in Darwin.

The Local Organising Committee have put together an interesting and varied program drawing on the theme, Lung Function Beyond the Laboratory, to offer topics ranging from lung function in Primary Care and Indigenous Health to Telemedicine and the impact of ethnicity and other variables on Predicted Values. In addition, the program also boasts a comparative physiology session rarely offered at an annual scientific meeting.

We are pleased to welcome our eminent international speaker, Prof. Josep Roca and our distinguished national speakers, Prof. Anne Chang, A/Prof. Peter Morris, A/Prof. Alan James, A/Prof. Peter Catcheside and Prof. Roger Seymour. The program showcases not only the work of these speakers but also the significant contribution of our own members; Mr Jeff Pretto, Dr Andrew Thornton, A/Prof. Graham Hall, A/Prof. David Johns, A/Prof. Alan Crockett and Dr Debbie Burton. Their varied knowledge and experience should provide something interesting for all participants and I thank each of them for their input.

This year the Local Organising Committee has the added pleasure of offering an additional shared plenary session with the TSANZ, allowing members to access presentations by TSANZ international invited speakers. Moreover, following the success of previous meetings, the program continues to provide delegates with the opportunity to attend the shared Masterclass session; this year with a focus on flow limitation. On the final day, delegates can hone their research presentation skills or work toward their CRFS credential by attending one of the workshops on offer.

In addition to the scientific program, scientific meetings provide an opportunity to learn about new and emerging technologies and liaise with industry in one convenient location and this year's meeting is no exception. I encourage all delegates to visit the trade exhibit and engage with trade representatives about their products and services.

Darwin provides an idyllic setting for a relaxed social program. The outdoor Welcome Reception will overlook the pristine waters of the Arafura Sea on the grounds of the new Darwin Convention Centre. On Saturday evening, shuttle buses will deliver delegates to the secluded Conference Dinner venue, Pee Wee's at the Point. Set among the poincianas, delegates can watch the sunset over the Darwin skyline as they enjoy a wonderful meal. The weather will be balmy so tropical dress is a must.

I look forward to meeting new delegates, catching up with friends and colleagues and learning much from the meeting and trade in 2009 and I hope you can join me in Darwin to see what the 2009 Annual Scientific Meeting has to offer.
