It is amazing how long it takes to prepare posters for the ASM. I have not been able to escape to the library for a decent length of time for a couple of months now. A recent brief forage netted a few references that may be of interest to some. I remind all that contributions to this page would be appreciated.
A recent CHEST had an interesting paper and editorial on the 6 minute walk test.
- Clinical usefulness and limitation of the 6-minute walk test in patients with cardiovascular or pulmonary disease. T.Reybrouck Chest 123:235-236,2003
- The 6-minute walk test: a quick measure of functional status in elderly adults. P.L.Enright et al. ibid. 387-399.
Another editorial that discussed the influence of context on reaching a diagnosis
- Is it difficult to diagnose sarcoidosis? P.A. Kvale, ibid. 330-332.
Confusion between inspiratory stridor and expiratory wheeze may be behind the diagnosis of EIA in some elite athletes - something I suspect a lot of us have wondered about on more than one occasion.
- Inspiratory stridor in Elite Athletes. K.W.Rundall and B.A. Spiering. ibid. 468-75.
And on a related topic
- Vocal chord dysfunction induced by methacholine challenge testing. P.J. Perkins and M.J.Morris. Chest 122: 1988-1994, 2002.
Whilst on challenge testing and elite athletes, from our own Sandy Anderson:
- Mannitol as a challenge test to identify exercise-induced bronchoconstriction in elite athletes. K.Holzer et al. Amer J Resp Crit Care Med, 167:534-537, 2003
For those with a more academic interest in exercise:
- Human skeletal muscle hyperraemia: its magnitude and regulation during exercise. G. Radegran, Dan Med Bull 50:39-63,2003.
Finally bad news on the diet front. Fasting is good for your lipid profile!
- Effects of Ramadan fasting on serum low-density and serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations. D. Qujeq et al. Ann Saudi Med, 22:297-299,2002.
Until next month, happy browsing!!
