Library Corner...
May 2003

For the first time in several months I have been able to make a decent block of time available to peruse the journals. It was nice to be able to escape to a comfortable chair and relax over some journals again after what seems to have been a long time. I have bulleted a couple of Guideline papers.

Starting off with a couple of sleep related papers that arose from work with the oral CPAP mask developed by Fisher and Paykel in New Zealand:

  • Continuous positive airway pressure: by nose or mouth? M.R.Littner. Chest, 2003; 123: 662-663 (editorial).
  • A physiologic comparison of nasal and oral positive airway pressure. P.L.Smith et al. ibid, 689-694.

And some more contributions relating to home sleep studies:

  • Evaluation of a portable device based on peripheral arterial tone for unattended home sleep studies. A.Bar et al. ibid, 695-703.
  • Evaluation of unattended automated titration to determine therapeutic continuous positive airway pressure in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea. R.Kassler et al. ibid, 704-710.

There were a number of papers relating to standards and usefulness of measurements across the spectrum of tests we do:

  • Spirometry testing standards in spinal cord injury. A.Kelley et al. ibid, 725-730.
  • Comparison of maximal mid-expiratory flow rate and forced expiratory flow at 50% of vital capacity in children. E.Bar-Yishay et al. ibid 731-735.
  • Long term assessment of lung function in survivors of severe ARDS. T.A.Neff. et al. ibid 8245-853. (Cardiopulmonary exercise tests found to be best indicator of gas exchange even if DLCO normal)
  • What is the best way to measure lung function? C.L.Ren. ibid 667. (editorial)
  • Prospective evaluation of the validity of exhaled nitric oxide for the diagnosis of asthma. L.J.DuPont et al. ibid 751-756.
  • Asthma features in severe a1-antitrypsin deficiency: Experience of the National Heart , Lung and Blood Institute Registry. E.Eden et al. ibid 765-772.
  • The pattern and timing of breathing during incremental exercise: a normative study. J.A.Neder et al. Eur Resp J, 2003; 21: 530-538. (this continues the Neder papers on normative exercise data)
  • British Thoracic Society guidelines on respiratory aspects of fitness for diving. Thorax 2003; 583-513.
  • Relationship between FEV1.0 reduction and respiratory symptoms in the general population. N.Takeways et al. Eur Resp J 2003; 21: 658-663.
  • Nutrition and respiratory health in adults: findings from the health survey for Scotland. Y.Kelly et al. ibid 664-671.
  • ATS/ACCP statement on cardiopulmonary exercise testing. Am J Resp Crit Care Med 2003; 167: 211-277.
  • Role of exercise and lung function in predicting work status in cystic fibrosis. ibid 150-157.

And finally an essay from the "How it really happened" series

  • Putting numbers to theories about periodic breathing. Putting your money where your mouth is. N. Cherniack. ibid, 112-113.

Until next month, happy browsing!!

Kevin
